The Ahmat family – Dwayne and Jayne with daughters Milly & Evy – moved to Thursday Island in the Torres Strait in Far North Queensland in January 2013 to take up teaching positions. This blog chronicles their journey…
Dwayne is a high school Industrial Technology (i.e. manual arts) teacher working full time at Tagai State College - Thursday Island Secondary Campus. His grandfather was born & grew up on Thursday Island before moving south to Mackay where he eventually started his family. Dwayne is returning to strengthen our ties to his family & culture.
Jayne is an Early Childhood teacher who has been working part time since having children. She thought she had a part-time teaching job at Tagai State College - Thursday Island Primary Campus starting in semester 2 2013, but that fell through. She now does relief teaching work at Tagai Primary & at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (the catholic primary school on T.I.), works as a tutor at the T.I. James Cook University campus, is on the school P&C & is a parent volunteer in her daughter's classroom.
Milly turned 6 in March 2014 and is a happy Year 1 student at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (OLSH). She is a daydreaming chatterbox who loves mermaids and princesses and enjoys dancing and swimming.
Evy turns 3 in April 2014 and is a relaxed and friendly toddler. She is talkative and affectionate and is enjoying the Montessori toddler program, the playgroup and the supermarket here on Thursday Island.
Hello - we are looking at moving to TI for a contract as I work for Qld Health. We are currently waiting on accommodation - apparently this is difficult to secure for a family - did you find this was the case?
ReplyDeleteJillian,
DeleteIm hoping to get work in TI early this year, as a nurse. Are you still there?
