A day of relief teaching at Hammond Island

Jayne did a day of relief teaching at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart's Hammond Island campus, which has a Kindy/Prep class & a Year 1/2/3 class.
She caught the Hammond ferry from T.I. in the morning & enjoyed a scenic walk to work...taught at the campus for the morning, then accompanied the school children and staff on the ferry back to T.I. for the end-of-term liturgy at the Thursday Island campus church.
The ferry's steering cable snapped halfway across the channel...so all were adrift for 5 mins while the ferry captain undertook some swift repairs & the gentle rocking sent the children to sleep.
Thanks to the crafty captain, Sharon, the ferry arrived safely & the Hammond children attended the church service, followed by lunch & play at the park, before returning on the afternoon ferry to their island home.

Long Weekend spent on Horn Island - Wongai Resort

June 2014
Need to step off "the rock" (T.I.)?
Try a night or 2 at the Wongai resort on Horn Island...
We caught the ferry over, stayed 2 nights in a cosy cabin with 1 queen + 2 fold-out beds (a very tight squeeze!), went for afternoon walks around Wasaga village, strolled in the little 'IBIS' grocery store & the 'Island & Cape' mini mart, visited the Culture & Heritage Museum,  slept in, swam in the freezing resort pool, ate lunch at the Hotel's pub, ate our included continental breakfast on our cabin's deck, & just generally chillaxed...
A good break!

Dwayne's parents visit...

May 2014
Dwayne's Mum, Thelma, and Step-dad, Maurie, came for a long weekend visit in May.
They arrived on the Friday afternoon flight and we showed them around T.I. in the car & around our house.

We had dinner at the Grand Hotel's Malu Paru restaurant that night...
On Saturday morning we took Thelma & Maurie out in the boat - though the weather was less than favourable - windy & choppy!
We enjoyed a picnic at Little Buttertin Beach on P.O.W. Island, which was nicely sheltered from the seasonal South-Easterly.  We explored the dunes, rocks, wildflowers & the girls had a swim.

We had booked to go to Kazu Pearl Farm on Friday Island for a pearl tour & Japanese lunch - so headed there next...We had our own private "coconut hut" to enjoy our lunch in.

Then we had a tour of the pearl farm, where Thelma & Maurie saw a pearl seeding demonstration & looked at opened pearl shells to see the animal & pearl inside.

This pearl shell even had a darling little crab inside!

Then we headed back through the swell to T.I. - a very wet ride!

Sunday was Mother's Day.
Maurie and Dwayne went fishing on the rock wall at Quarantine in an attempt stay out of the wind a bit...
Thelma, the girls & I had morning tea together.

Monday...
Dwayne headed to work, but Milly had a day off school so we could take Nanny to Strait Start.
We walked along the Esplanade and played at the pearl shell and turtle sculptures.

Then we had morning tea at Uncle Frankie's Cafe in Douglas St, visited Mona's dress and souvenir shop & walked through the Gab Titui Cultural Center...

...before taking Thelma and Maurie down to Navy Wharf to catch the Rebel Ferry back to Horn Island for their flight.
Thanks for visiting us Nanny and Maurie!
